Kalista's Hope
In this story, strong-willed Kalista is determined her father and domineering stepmother will not have their way in marrying her off to a man of their choosing. She has made plans to the contrary. When Gaius enters her world, Kalista’s baffled and intrigued. His selflessness and strength of character is like a balm to her unsettled soul. And yet, not even Gaius’ kind words and warm sentiments are able to quell the wounds buried deep within her. After fleeing to Pompeii, her mother’s ancestral home, Kalista soul-searches and discovers one thing that might save her family from ruin. But when the fires of Rome burn, leaving devastation in its wake, and Gaius and her family are nowhere to be found, Kalista is left with nothing but ashes. How can she believe life is still worth living? |
Ancient RomeThe story, KALISTA'S HOPE, takes place in 62 AD, during the early reign of Nero as emperor. Nero's mother was losing control in her position of authority over him. He was becoming reckless and cruel, and the common people were feeling the repercussions of it. There were great distinctions between the upper classes, lower classes and slaves, marked by clothing and hairstyles. Rome adopted many of their gods and religious superstitions from other cultures, some of which were little understood.

ArchitectureProminent buildings of the upper class were grand and stately, with intricate designs carved into them. The poorer class had 'high rise' apartments built of wood, sometimes eight stories high. There were many statues, molded and formed gods that littered the streets and homes.
|
FrescosThe walls were painted in lively frescos depicting gods, birds, flowers, scenes of life and society. When the homes were being built, the artists painted on the damp plaster of the walls, so that the painting was part of the wall. It was actually colored plaster.
